Hair transplantation

In the best hair transplantation
technique, hair is transplanted as it grows naturally, follicle
by single follicle, or in groups of two or three. This is the gold
standard of transplantation that few doctors around the world care
to do. Because the technique is so painstaking and labor intensive,
it is very expensive to do in the United States, for example. But
it gives absolutely the best and most natural results.
If a person is quite bald yet
wants to regain almost full coverage (generally more than 4,000
grafts), this will take two or even three sessions about three or
four months apart.
Some bald men, especially younger
ones, want as much hair growth as possible and choose to have the
three sessions. Others who may at first want a full head of hair
are delighted with the results of only one session if the hair is
transplanted in a balanced way to give a "fuller" look.
Hair follicles concentrated in
a horseshoe-shaped area at the back of the head are plentiful in
virtually all men, even severely bald ones. These excess hairs,
or "donor" hair, follicles and all, are “replanted” in areas of
thinning and balding on the head.
A day or two after transplantation,
the transplanted hair shaft falls out, leaving the follicle behind.
Small scabs form on the scalp and are unsightly for a week or so
until they fall out, leaving behind only the follicles that are
invisible on the head.
Increasingly, women are getting
hair transplantation as their hair thins with age or from damage
from severe hair styling and coloring. Women rarely need more than
one session of 2,000 - 2,400 grafts, often quite a bit less than
that.
