Breast lift

Mastopexy

Non-Surgical Cosmetic Procedures Wellness and Health

Breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag as a woman ages and her skin loses its elasticity and the supporting muscle tissue droops from gravity. The breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts.

A "lift" is designed to tighten your skin and perk up your breasts without affecting their size. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in heavy breasts. A breast lift is sometimes combined with breast augmentation.

Breast lifting techniques vary, but the most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision following the natural contour of the breast. Excess skin is removed and the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position. The skin surrounding the areola is brought down and together to reshape the breast. Stitches are usually located around the areola, in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipple area, and along the lower crease of the breast.

Patients may feel some pain for the first couple of days after surgery. Bandages are usually removed a day or two after surgery, however patients will need to wear a surgical bra for several weeks, until the swelling and bruising subside. Stitches are removed in one to three weeks.

Some patients may experience random, shooting pains for the first few months after surgery. Some temporary loss of feeling in the nipples and breast skin.

Incision lines will be permanently visible but should fade over time.
